Choisya Goldfingers

Project Description

  • Gold form of Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’
  • Flowers are white tinged pink
  • Bright gold leaves
  • Ideal for a container or border
  • More compact than C. ‘Sundance’
  • Sun or partial shade
  • LIghtly shear after flowering in late spring
  • Feed with vitax Q4 April May
  • In a pot I recommend Chempak High Nitrogen No2
  • It can take a year or so to establish, but is well worth the wait

After I raised Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, the next challenge was to try and create a golden form with narrow leaves. Over the next 10 years, in fact every May, flowers were prepared on Choisya ‘Sundance’ to receive the pollen from Choisya arizonica.

Every year all the seedlings were rejected. I was just about to give up, when finally a small narrow gold leaf appeared in a plug tray. The seedling was potted up into a 7cm pot and by the autumn it was a small bushy plant. Then through the winter of 1994-5 the original leaves turned lime green but with the lengthening and warmer days of spring, strong shoots of gold opened to the sun.
